Spot prices for 314Ah energy-storage cells have jumped more than 20% in six months, with some quotes topping RMB 0.4/Wh, while the next-gen 500Ah+ segment has fractured into over ten competing formats — a capacity gap that is expected to last through year-end.

Why did 314Ah cells suddenly run short?

China's cumulative energy-storage orders topped 200 GWh in Q1 2026, and most public tenders now specify cells of at least 314Ah — locking 314Ah in as the baseline requirement.
Export demand surged in parallel: lithium-battery storage exports rose 71.8% year-on-year in the first four months, driven by Europe, Australia and North America. When the export tax rebate dropped from 9% to 6% in April, overseas buyers rushed to lock in stock, draining inventories further.

What went wrong on the supply side?

New lines take 6–12 months to build and another 3–6 months to ramp and certify. As of June 2026, most 500Ah+ lines have only completed small trial runs — nowhere near enough to absorb 314Ah demand.

September–December: 500Ah+ lines from Ganfeng Lithium, EVE Energy and Envision AESC are set to complete ramp-ups, partially relieving rigid 314Ah demand from large storage projects. Prices may ease modestly.
A senior industry executive estimates 314Ah still has roughly two years of useful life, but the competitive front line is shifting rapidly to 500Ah+. This means → 314Ah won't vanish overnight; it will gradually exit large-scale procurement and settle into smaller commercial and residential storage niches.

Why has the 500Ah+ segment splintered?

Unlike the 280Ah and 314Ah eras, which converged on a single standard quickly, the 500Ah+ field now has more than ten formats running in parallel: 587Ah, 588Ah, 628Ah, 684Ah, 702Ah, 790Ah — spanning a range from 580Ah to 1,300Ah.
This reflects a market where manufacturers have not agreed on a process route. The format fragmentation directly inflates downstream costs — container, BMS (battery management system) and PCS (power conversion system) makers must develop over a dozen matching solutions simultaneously.

Who is furthest ahead?

CATL: leads with 587Ah, in mass production since June 2025. Its Shandong base produces 220,000 cells/day; cumulative shipments exceed 5 GWh. A 2026–2028 offtake deal with HyperStrong covers at least 200 GWh.
EVE Energy: its 628Ah is the first 600Ah-class cell in large-scale production, with over 1 million cells off the line. A 702Ah ultra-high-capacity cell is planned for mass production in 2027.
Hithium: launched the ∞Cell 650Ah in early June, adding to an existing lineup of 1,300Ah, 1,175Ah and 587Ah cells. The 1,130Ah and 587Ah models have already secured overseas orders.
Envision AESC: plans to begin large-scale production of a 790Ah cell at its Yichang, Hubei base in July — rated energy of 2,528 Wh per cell, volumetric energy density above 440 Wh/L, and a cycle life of 15,000 cycles.

When will the format war converge?

587Ah has the most followers — Hithium, Pylon, Pengli Infinity (鹏程无限) and Rept Battero (瑞浦兰钧) all produce it. Sungrow has co-developed a 684Ah stacked-electrode cell with upstream partners. Pylon, Chuen (楚能), Rongjie (融捷), Rept Battero and Sunwoda offer 588Ah cells.
Leading makers are running a dual-track strategy: 500Ah+ secures 2026 orders and cash flow, while 700Ah+ products are developed in parallel to stake out future market position.
Industry observers expect the format split will not last: by 2027, the field should converge to two or three mainstream standard cells. This means → whichever maker achieves scale production first and locks in long-term offtake agreements with top-tier customers will likely set the terms for the next round of competition.
