SK Hynix to Mass-Produce LPDDR6 in H2, Xiaomi to Be First Adopter

SK Hynix plans to begin mass production of LPDDR6 in the second half of 2026, with Xiaomi as its first mobile customer. This means the next-generation flagship-phone memory race is officially on — and Korean suppliers' grip on high-end mobile DRAM looks secure for now.
What is LPDDR6, and why does it matter now?
LPDDR6 — the next generation of low-power memory used in phones and mobile devices — succeeds LPDDR5X with higher speed and lower power draw.
SK Hynix completed development certification for the world's first LPDDR6 product in March this year, and confirmed mass-production shipments for H2 2026.
This means → the chip has moved from "lab-proven" to "factory-ready," and SK Hynix has locked in a head start over most rivals.
Why is Xiaomi first in line?
Xiaomi's relationship with SK Hynix dates back to 2013, when SK Hynix supplied LPDDR3 for early Xiaomi handsets; the partnership later extended to LPDDR5X.
In plain terms = a decade-plus supply-chain bond earned Xiaomi the "first to ship" slot.
After Xiaomi, SK Hynix is expected to expand LPDDR6 supply to vivo, OPPO, and other Chinese smartphone brands — the first-mover window belongs to Xiaomi, but it is not exclusive.
Why can't Chinese flagships quit Korean memory?
China's phone market is splitting clearly: entry-level and mid-range devices increasingly use memory from CXMT (ChangXin Memory Technologies) and other domestic makers.
But flagship models demand peak performance and remain heavily dependent on Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron for LPDDR.
This reflects a structural reality: Chinese memory firms have secured the mid-to-low end, but the technology barrier in high-end mobile DRAM is still held by Korean and American suppliers.
How far ahead are the two Korean firms?
Samsung launched its LPDDR6 in January 2026, built on its 1b process node — the fifth generation of 10 nm-class DRAM.
SK Hynix's product reportedly uses the 1c process node — the sixth generation, one step newer.
This means → both Korean makers are ahead of Micron in production readiness, and the LPDDR6 first-mover market is essentially split between Samsung and SK Hynix.
Where else can LPDDR6 go?
The battlefield extends beyond phones. SOCAMM — a form factor that packages LPDDR into modules for AI servers — is gaining traction fast.
In plain terms = the AI industry is shifting from "training large models" to "running inference at scale," and inference workloads are hungry for low-power memory — SOCAMM fills exactly that gap.
Whether SK Hynix can parlay its LPDDR6 head start into a scale advantage on the SOCAMM track is the key validation point to watch in the next phase.
