South Korea's August exports jumped 68.7% year-on-year to $98.26 billion, with chip shipments tripling to a record $46.65 billion; AI demand has made semiconductors the country's dominant export engine, but autos and ships are sliding — a widening "K-shaped" split.

01

How strong was this export print?

August exports hit $98.26 billion, up 68.7% year-on-year — the 15th straight month of growth, beating the 62.0% median forecast from a Wall Street Journal survey of 13 economists.
Imports rose 22.5% to $63.51 billion; the trade surplus widened to $34.75 billion, up from July's revised $30.39 billion.
This means → exports grew three times faster than imports, rapidly widening Korea's trade surplus — not just "good exports" but "exports far outpacing imports."
02

Why do chips now account for a third of all exports?

August semiconductor exports tripled year-on-year to $46.65 billion, a record, up from $41.0 billion in July and $45.0 billion in June.
Chips now represent over one-third of Korea's total exports. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix — the world's two largest memory-chip makers — both posted record revenue and profit in Q2.
In plain terms = Korea's "beat" on exports is almost entirely a chip beat. One product category is carrying the entire growth story.
03

How long can AI demand sustain this?

SK Hynix is Nvidia's primary supplier of HBM — high-bandwidth memory, a chip designed for AI large-model training. CEO Kwak Noh-jung (郭諾正) said last week at the groundbreaking of a $4 billion AI chip plant in Indiana that AI-driven demand will keep the memory market undersupplied through the end of this decade.
Kwak added that the chip shortage could last until the end of 2030 — two years longer than Samsung's July forecast.
This means → the suppliers themselves are betting that shortage is the long-term state. If that call is right, Korea's chip-export boom is not a one- or two-quarter story.
04

What about sectors outside tech?

Computer shipments roughly quintupled year-on-year in August; smartphone exports rose 21%. Tech categories were broadly strong.
But auto exports fell 30% (hit by labor disputes) and ship exports dropped 10% (delayed deliveries).
This reflects a "K-shaped" split in Korea's export structure — tech expanding fast while parts of the non-tech economy are under pressure. Growth is far from even.
05

Who is buying?

Exports to the U.S. surged 89% year-on-year in August; exports to China more than doubled. Both major markets fired at once.
Exports to the Middle East fell 15% — destination-level divergence is just as stark.
In plain terms = whether AI infrastructure demand holds at this intensity through year-end, and how quickly autos and ships recover, are the key tests in coming monthly data. The further a one-legged chip story runs, the more concentrated the risk becomes.
