Stripe Virtual Cards Dominate AI Shopping Payments, Threatening Visa and Mastercard

Stripe issues one-time virtual cards for AI shopping agents, making it the default infrastructure for agentic payments; Visa and Mastercard face a twin threat to transaction visibility and data control.

01

How does an AI agent actually pay for things?

AI agents — programs that browse, compare, and buy on a user's behalf — initiate payments through Stripe's Link digital wallet.
Stripe generates a single-use virtual card for each transaction, capped at a set spending limit. The agent never sees the user's real card number.
This means → one purchase in the user's eyes becomes two separate card transactions inside the payment network: the virtual card charges the merchant, then Stripe charges the user's real card.
02

Why are Visa and Mastercard alarmed?

The dual-transaction structure makes it harder for card networks, banks, and merchants to link a user to the actual purchase — complicating dispute resolution and fraud detection.
More critically, Stripe captures shopping-preference data on the agent side, a layer the card networks cannot see at all.
In plain terms = Stripe sits between user and merchant, pushing the card networks further to the periphery — earning fees *and* gaining a data edge.
03

Can Stripe reroute transactions from one card network to another?

When issuing a virtual card, Stripe can pick a different network from the user's original card — a user's Mastercard purchase might be fulfilled with a Visa virtual card.
This means → transaction volume and interchange fees can shift directly from the original network to a rival.
Self CEO Rene Reinsberg put it bluntly: "The biggest risk for Visa and Mastercard is that Stripe's infrastructure becomes the default."
04

How are Visa and Mastercard fighting back?

Both have launched counter-proposals — Visa Intelligent Commerce and Mastercard Agent Pay — built on the same idea: issue digital tokens (encrypted substitutes for real card numbers) so agents can pay without touching sensitive card data, while the network retains full transaction visibility.
Visa is piloting with Bill and Billtrust, letting authorized agents pay approved invoices on a buyer's behalf. Both networks are also partnering with Anthropic to help merchants build AI shopping assistants on Claude.
This reflects the networks' strategy: don't block AI agents — pull them back inside the network's rails. But these programs remain early-stage with no meaningful scale yet.
05

How big is this market, and how fast is it growing?

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors that more than a quarter of Muse's 10 million users are using its shopping feature, with an average transaction above $200.
Demand surged so fast that Meta had to contact Stripe within one week of Muse's launch to raise its credit limit.
In plain terms = whoever locks in the infrastructure position during this window will likely set the payment rules for the entire agentic-commerce era.
