Tencent Cloud disclosed on Tuesday that the new generation of video codec chip, Canghai V2, has been successfully "lit up" and is currently entering the mass production cycle, with plans to fully provide online services in the second half of 2026. According to Tencent Cloud, "lighting up" a chip refers to the smooth passage of current through the chip, meaning the chip is usable.

The development of Tencent's "Canghai" chip was initiated in 2019, with mass production and large-scale application in 2023. Currently, Canghai V1 has been deployed in over 100,000 units in Tencent Cloud and Tencent's own scenarios, covering core scenes such as live and on-demand broadcasting, 4K ultra-high-definition high frame rate transcoding, real-time cloud gaming encoding, and multimedia processing.

The main change in V2 is that it integrates encoding standards, processing capabilities, and image quality enhancement into the same architecture. Tencent Cloud introduced that Canghai V2 adopts a unified hardware architecture, supporting both H.265 and H.266 mainstream video encoding standards; with the same image quality, the compression rate of H.265 has improved by more than 10% compared to the previous generation, and H.266 has improved by more than 30%. The codec processing capability of a single chip is doubled compared to V1.

In terms of image quality processing, Canghai V2 integrates CPU, GPU, and computer vision processing capabilities, allowing intelligent analysis of videos at the bottom layer, supporting algorithms for super-resolution, sharpening, dehazing, and noise reduction. For high-concurrency scenarios such as cloud gaming, V2 also has built-in GPU cores, achieving shared memory between rendering and encoding on the same chip architecture.
