Tencent Tests TenPayGo App, Covering Tens of Millions of Merchants to Enable Mobile Payments for Foreign Visitors
0xBroomberg
Tencent is internally testing TenPayGo, a standalone app that lets foreign visitors tap into tens of millions of WeChat Pay merchants across China — riding an inbound-travel surge of 26.4% year-on-year.
What exactly is TenPayGo?
TenPayGo is a one-stop digital-services app Tencent built specifically for foreign visitors, with mobile payment at its core.
In plain terms = a foreign traveler downloads the app and can scan-to-pay at merchants nationwide, no cash needed.
It covers transit, dining, and shopping, plugging directly into WeChat Pay's existing network of tens of millions of merchants.
Why test it now?
Cross-border trips in 2025 approached 7 billion, with foreign nationals making over 82 million entry-exit trips — up 26.4% year-on-year.
This means → the pool of inbound visitors is expanding fast, and the gap in payment access is growing with it.
Two forces drive the surge: broader visa-exemption arrangements and a string of new entry-facilitation measures.
How far along is it?
The app is still in limited internal testing and has not been publicly launched.
This means → features and user experience are still being refined — a full-scale rollout is not imminent.
Whether TenPayGo can capitalize on this inbound wave depends on when it officially launches and how complete the product is at that point.
