Tesla and SpaceX Announce $16.8 Billion Terafab Chip Factory Plan

Tesla and SpaceX will jointly build a chip factory called Terafab in Texas, with $16.8 billion in initial investment and a potential long-term outlay of $119 billion — Musk is betting on a vertically integrated chip supply chain to power his robot-and-satellite empire.
What will Terafab actually make?
Two chip families: edge-computing and inference chips for Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot and its self-driving Cybercab, and high-power chips for SpaceX's space-based data centers.
In plain terms = one line builds brains for robots on the ground; the other builds compute engines for satellites in orbit.
The factory combines chip fabrication, packaging — mounting bare dies into usable modules — and testing under one roof, spanning over 100 million square feet. Musk called it "the largest and most valuable building on Earth."
Is $16.8 billion just the down payment?
The first phase lands $16.8 billion in Grimes County, outside Houston. SpaceX's earlier regulatory filings put the multi-phase total at up to $119 billion.
This means → the opening check is roughly one-seventh of the full bill — a figure that rivals TSMC's entire planned investment in Arizona.
Notably, SpaceX said nothing about Terafab on its first-ever earnings call earlier this week. The gap between the project's scale and its disclosure footprint is hard to miss.
What role does Intel play?
Intel has confirmed it will participate in Terafab but offered no details on what it will contribute.
This means → Intel could supply process technology or foundry capacity, but the depth of the partnership is unclear — core technology partner or peripheral supplier, no one can tell yet.
How deeply Intel is actually involved will be the key signal for judging whether this vertical-integration strategy can stay on schedule.
How does the local community feel?
The two companies promised at least 3,000 jobs across Grimes County and neighboring Brazos County.
The day before the announcement, however, hundreds of residents packed a county-commission meeting to voice concerns over millions of dollars in tax abatements and a lack of transparency.
Local school superintendent Sarah Borowicz said she would ensure every opportunity in the agreement is managed "properly and transparently." This reflects a tension that never goes away when mega-projects land: jobs on one side, public-resource concessions on the other.
What is Musk's endgame logic?
The future Musk envisions — millions of robots replacing human labor, robo-taxis everywhere, satellites doubling as AI data centers — demands far more compute than today's global chip capacity can deliver.
In plain terms = existing fabs simply cannot feed his plans, so he decided to build his own.
This is a vertical-integration gamble, moving from buying chips to making them. Whether it pays off hinges on the factory hitting its timeline, Intel's commitment materializing, and a $119 billion funding chain holding together to the end.
