Tesla plans to open Cybercab rides to the public in Austin as early as late August — one of the first vehicles ever to operate on public roads with no steering wheel and no brake pedal.

What exactly is the Cybercab?

Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle designed solely for driverless ride services. It has no steering wheel and no brake pedal — the car runs entirely on its autonomous driving system.
This means → there is no manual override inside the vehicle. Once a passenger gets in, only the system drives — an extreme rarity among production vehicles.
Tesla says it has remote operators standing by to intervene in emergencies.

How far along are the launch preparations?

Tesla has completed several pre-launch steps: test drives on private roads, employee ride feedback collection, and emergency-responder training.

What regulatory and commercial hurdles remain?

It is still unclear whether Tesla has secured regulatory approval to use Cybercab for paid commercial rides, or whether it plans to offer rides for free.
For comparison, Amazon's Zoox only received NHTSA approval in July to begin paid rides in a similarly wheel-less vehicle — before that, Zoox offered free rides only.
This means → even once Cybercab is on the road, the gap between "free demo rides" and "paid service" requires a separate regulatory clearance.

What about mass production and replacing the current fleet?

Musk said on the July earnings call that Cybercab is built on an entirely new platform and needs to accumulate vehicle-specific driving data before scaling up.
Tesla started Cybercab production in Texas last month, but later said it no longer expects mass production within 2026.
Austin's Robotaxi service currently runs 186 Model Y vehicles. Whether Cybercab can gradually replace or supplement that fleet — and how much revenue it generates — will be the key test of this strategy.
