Uber is cutting roughly 10% of its community operations team, explicitly tying the layoffs to AI-driven efficiency — the first time the company has linked job cuts directly to AI, signaling the replacement effect is spreading from pure tech firms to platform businesses.
Who got cut, and how deep?
Uber is eliminating about 10% of its community operations team — the unit that handles driver and rider support.
This is the company's second round of layoffs in under two months. In June it cut 23% of its "people team," though that affected less than 1% of its 34,000 global workforce.

Why is this round different?
Previous cuts were framed as organizational streamlining. This time Uber explicitly tied the layoffs to AI efficiency gains — a first for the company.
Global community-operations VP Megha Yethatika wrote in an internal memo: "Our organization has become too complex and fragmented."
Her core argument: AI tools have shown progress, but fragmented processes block AI from scaling. The restructuring reshapes the org to fit AI, not just to cut costs.
In plain terms = the message is not "AI can already do your job" — it is "we need to rebuild the org into a shape AI can run through, and the extra headcount no longer fits."
What else came with the cuts?
Alongside the layoffs, remote employees are being required to relocate to hub offices, aligning with the company's return-to-office policy.
This means → staying employees face two filters at once — adopt the new AI workflow and give up remote work. The actual attrition may exceed the stated 10%.
Uber is still hiring — how does that square?
In May Uber said it would slow hiring due to internal AI adoption, yet its careers page still lists over 500 open positions.
Those include engineering roles supporting robotaxi partnership projects.
This reflects a clear substitution pattern: cut repetitive customer-service roles → backfill with AI and autonomous-vehicle technical roles.
What does this mean for the broader industry?
Block and Oracle have also recently cited AI as a reason for layoffs — Uber is not alone.
But Uber's case stands out: as a platform business, it relies heavily on outsourced customer service — exactly the kind of work AI replaces most readily.
