Volkswagen Bets on XPeng to Save Its China Business, but First Joint Model Sells Only 267 Units per Month
nashnova research
The UNYX 08, the first car from VW's partnership with Xpeng (09868.HK), averaged just 267 units a month from April to August — under 8% of VW's internal target. This means VW's core strategy of rebuilding China competitiveness through local partnerships is failing its first real test.
How bad is 267 units a month?
The UNYX 08 averaged 267 units/month against an internal target of 3,622 — just under 8% of plan. Data is from auto consultancy ThinkerCar.
In the same period and price bracket: Xiaomi's YU7 sold nearly 57,000 units, Zeekr's 7X sold over 21,000, and the UNYX 08 sold roughly 1,300 total.
This means → the car didn't just underperform — it was virtually invisible in a segment where rivals sold forty times more.
What went wrong with the product?
The UNYX 08 is priced at roughly $34,300, but Chinese competitors at the same price offer more: Xiaomi's YU7 packs an advanced sensor suite, the Zeekr 7X delivers fast charging.
In plain terms = for the same money, Chinese brands give you more kit. VW's brand premium, which held for decades in combustion cars, is not carrying over to EVs.
Analyst Stephen Reitman recalled that VW showed computer renders of the Xpeng-partnered model before the April 2024 Beijing Auto Show. "The next day at the show, that kind of design was basically already on the market."
Why did the sales channel fail too?
VW did not sell the UNYX 08 through the 3,000-plus dealerships it runs with its FAW and SAIC joint ventures. Instead it used a separate, smaller dealer network under VW Anhui.
Two sources said VW Anhui's footprint was too narrow — many consumers had never heard of the car.
This means → VW's biggest asset in China — its massive dealer network — was left completely on the sideline for its most important new-energy product.
How is VW framing this?
VW declined to comment on the leaked sales-target document. In a statement it said the Xpeng partnership delivered a new EV architecture enabling local production and faster development — completed in a record 18 months.
VW characterized the UNYX 08 SUV and the related UNYX 09 sedan as "additional outcomes" of the partnership, not the core objective.
In plain terms = VW's line is: we bought a technology platform, not a single-model sales hit. But investors are watching whether that platform can ever translate into volume.
What does this mean for VW's China strategy?
VW dominated China for decades — it was still the country's largest car brand as recently as 2022. But China's share of group profit has plunged from nearly 50% to roughly 10%.
That reversal forced VW into the largest restructuring in its 89-year history.
This reflects a deeper problem: the brand advantage and dealer advantage VW built over the combustion era are both failing at once in the EV era. The UNYX 08's dismal numbers are simply the latest data point in that trend.
