Wall Street Divided: GE Vernova Upgraded While Caterpillar's Price Target Slashed

Why did GE Vernova get upgraded?

HSBC analyst Sean McLoughlin raised GE Vernova from "hold" to "buy," lifting the target from $1,040 to $1,100.
The logic: strong power-equipment demand → better pricing power → rising margins.
Mizuho also raised its target to $959 the same day, citing Q3 results that "beat expectations with raised guidance."
02

Why was Caterpillar's target cut so sharply?

Baird analyst Mig Dobre slashed Caterpillar's target from $970 to $729 — roughly a 25% cut.
He acknowledged a slight Q3 beat but flagged slowing growth. In his words: "Good becoming less good typically leads to multiple compression and stock declines."
This means → Dobre sees Caterpillar as a classic cyclical. The AI super-cycle, in his view, does not exempt it from the old playbook of cyclical pullbacks.
03

Does the valuation data support Wall Street's preference?

GE Vernova trades at roughly 32× forward P/E (forward price-to-earnings — how much the market pays per dollar of expected profit). Caterpillar trades at only about 20×.
Per FactSet, Caterpillar's expected EPS growth averages nearly 20% annually over three years — slightly above GE Vernova's.
In plain terms = Wall Street prefers buying GE Vernova on dips over Caterpillar, but by the "cheaper and faster-growing" test, the numbers actually favor Caterpillar.
04

How did the stocks trade on the day?

GE Vernova fell roughly 2.5% in early trading. Caterpillar dropped about 1.9%. The S&P 500 slid 1.3%.
Alphabet, Intel, and Amazon all posted weak earnings, cooling confidence in the AI trade.
This means → the upgrade's lift was completely offset by AI-sentiment drag; in the short term, mood beat fundamentals.
05

What will ultimately settle this debate?

One variable matters most: how long can AI data-center power demand actually last?
If AI capex keeps expanding, GE Vernova's premium valuation gets absorbed by growth, and Caterpillar can rally again too.
If the AI narrative fades, both stocks face pressure — but GE Vernova, with its higher multiple, carries greater drawdown risk.
