Yuan Hits 4-Year High as PBOC Manages Pace of Appreciation

The yuan rose to a four-year high against the dollar, extending an eight-day winning streak — but the PBOC's daily fix keeps lagging market expectations, signaling Beijing wants appreciation on its own schedule.

01

How far has the yuan moved, and for how long?

Onshore yuan touched 6.6682 intraday, the strongest since June 2022, and was last at 6.6691.
If the gain holds through the close, it will mark eight consecutive days of gains — the longest streak since May.
Offshore yuan traded at 6.6688, up roughly 0.01%, nearly matching the onshore rate.
The drivers: softer oil prices and falling U.S. Treasury yields jointly weighed on the dollar, lifting the yuan by default.
02

Why is the PBOC letting the yuan rise while pumping the brakes?

The PBOC set the daily midpoint fix — the official guidance rate published each morning — at 6.7162, the strongest since February 2023.
Yet that figure was still 471 basis points weaker than Reuters' estimate, the widest weak-side gap since September 23.
This means → the central bank is allowing the direction of appreciation while deliberately capping the speed.
In plain terms = Beijing's message is: "You can go up, but at my pace."
03

What does Wall Street make of this rally?

Barclays noted the PBOC "continues to resist a faster pace of appreciation through weaker-than-expected fixes," while setting a firmer floor against disorderly depreciation.
This means → the PBOC's playbook is "ceiling above, floor below" — neither runaway gains nor runaway losses are permitted.
Goldman Sachs held its 12-month yuan target at 6.40, arguing that "consensus forecasts and the forwards market underestimate the scope for appreciation because the starting point embeds deep undervaluation."
Goldman added, however, that "currency appreciation alone cannot address China's economic challenges" — both appreciation and domestic-demand support must work in tandem.
04

What comes next on the watchlist?

The Fed, the Bank of Japan, and the ECB all meet this week; markets widely expect rates on hold but a continued hawkish tone.
China's Fifth Plenum convenes at the same time; investors are watching for fresh policy signals.
This reflects a core tension ahead: the PBOC's managed pace vs Goldman's view that appreciation is underpriced — how and when those two forces converge will determine whether the 6.40 target is within reach.
