$6.4 Billion Bitcoin Options Expiry May Amplify Market Volatility
Nashnova编辑部
On Friday, $6.44 billion in Bitcoin options expire on Deribit — roughly 20% of the platform's open interest. Volatility indicators flipped in unison over the past week, dealer hedging pressure is surging, and $80,000 has become the pivotal battleground for bulls and bears.
How large is this expiry?
A total of 81,700 contracts expire, with a notional value of $6.44 billion — about 20% of Deribit's total Bitcoin open interest.
Of these, 44,639 are calls and 37,061 are puts, giving a put/call ratio of 0.83. This means → the market leans net bullish, with more capital betting on upside.
The two most-watched call strikes are $75,000 ($236 million notional) and $80,000 ($157 million notional).
Why did volatility signals flip all at once?
Over the past week, Bitcoin's volatility term structure shifted from backwardation to contango. In plain terms = previously the market priced near-term uncertainty higher than longer-dated; now it's the reverse — longer-dated uncertainty has overtaken the present.
The volatility index (DVOL) rose 30% in relative terms, and the call/put skew flipped from negative to positive. This means → three independent indicators moved in the same direction simultaneously — an uncommon signal cluster.
Deribit Chief Risk Officer Shaun Fernando called this expiry "one to watch closely."
What triggered these shifts?
The core catalyst: BTC surged from around $62,000 to $80,000 in roughly one week — the second-largest weekly gain in recent years.
The rally pushed a large number of call options with strikes below $80,000 into the money — meaning those options now carry real profit value — and the exposure dealers must manage expanded sharply.
This reflects a feedback loop: sharp spot moves amplify through the derivatives market — the faster the rally, the stronger the chain reaction in options.
How will dealer "gamma hedging" affect the price?
Fernando noted that contracts with over $500 million in notional value are clustered within a 5% range of the current price. This means → dealers must ramp up gamma hedging — continuously adjusting positions as the price moves.
In plain terms = every small price tick forces dealers to buy or sell BTC to rebalance their books — and that buying or selling itself pushes the price further, creating a self-reinforcing loop.
Two outcomes are possible: the price gets "pinned" near the key strike and barely moves, or once it breaks through, the move accelerates. The direction is uncertain, but volatility gets amplified either way.
Why is $80,000 the price level to watch?
$80,000 is both the largest cluster of open interest and the anchor around which the price has been trading.
Whether the price can decisively break above — or hold — this level around expiry is the key test for short-term direction.
In plain terms = this price is simultaneously the "most crowded table in the casino" and a technical inflection point — two forces stacking on each other, setting the tone for the days ahead.
