AI Borrowing Spree Pushes U.S. Treasury Yields to Near Two-Decade Highs

Five AI giants have raised over $200 billion in the bond market this year, driving the U.S. 30-year Treasury yield to its highest since 2007; their shift from spending cash on hand to borrowing is transmitting higher interest costs across the entire economy.
How much have these tech giants actually borrowed?
Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle have issued more than $200 billion in bonds so far this year.
From 2020 to 2024, the five averaged under $30 billion a year. In 2025 that jumped past $100 billion; this year it doubled again. This means → in just two years, their borrowing pace went from occasional to industrial-scale.

Why did spending matter little before but matters now?
Vanguard senior strategist Lucas Baynes noted that for most of the past decade, big tech funded AI investment from operating cash flow. "That era is ending."
Matt King, founder of Satori Insights, explained: when hyperscalers used their own cash for capex, the external funding market barely felt it — expansion was essentially "free." This means → once they turn to the bond market, capex is no longer free. The companies pay interest, and bond supply surges.
This reflects a key inflection: AI investment has grown so large that even the most profitable companies on earth can no longer cover it from cash alone.
Why are Treasury yields being pushed higher?
The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield rose this week to its highest level since 2007, driven in part by massive corporate bond supply competing for investor capital.
AI-fueled growth expectations are also at play. Markets anticipate the Fed will hold rates higher to prevent an inflation resurgence, adding upward pressure on yields.
The U.S. Treasury stepped in on Wednesday with increased debt buybacks, briefly pushing yields down — but they climbed right back on Thursday. In plain terms = a one-off technical intervention cannot override structural supply-demand pressure.
How much more are the companies themselves paying to borrow?
When Alphabet issued 10-year bonds in April, the spread — the premium over Treasuries — was 63 basis points. This month it issued the same maturity at 85 basis points.
Amazon's 10-year borrowing spread has also risen. This means → even the most creditworthy tech giants are seeing their own financing costs climb as they flood the market with supply.
Some analysts argue that relative to the vast Treasury market, direct crowding-out from AI corporate bonds is limited. But in the corporate-bond market, the supply shock's impact on borrowing costs is already visible.
What does this mean for ordinary people and the broader economy?
The AI buildout boom is a double-edged sword: massive capex supports economic growth on one side, while the shift in how it is financed is systematically pushing rates higher on the other.
The transmission chain: corporate borrowing costs rise → Treasury yields climb → mortgages, auto loans, and government debt-service costs all come under pressure. In plain terms = tech giants borrow to build AI, but the interest bill is ultimately shared across the entire economy.
