Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) Unveils Third-Generation Ultra-Fast Battery
On April 21, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) held the 2026 Super Technology Day, completing a collective upgrade of its entire range of passenger car battery products within 90 minutes. Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, and Citigroup consecutively released reports, all maintaining the highest rating and listing CATL as their top recommendation in the respective battery industry portfolio.
Four Major Product Lines: Comprehensive Upgrade from Charging Speed to Driving Range
The most market-focused release of this Technology Day is the third-generation Xingzhe ultra-fast charging battery.
The Xingzhe Gen3 uses LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cathode, with an average charging rate of 10C and a peak of 15C. Tested data shows that it takes only 3 minutes and 44 seconds to charge from 10% to 80%, and only 6 minutes and 27 seconds to charge from 10% to 98%. In extreme low-temperature environments of -30°C, it takes about 9 minutes to charge from 20% to 98%.
This data directly surpasses BYD, which released its second-generation Blade Battery in March this year and requires 9 minutes (at room temperature) and 12 minutes (at -30°C) to complete the same charging cycle. CATL defines this ultra-charging capability as a standard configuration covering the entire series of Xingzhe, Qilin, and Xiaoyao.
Morgan Stanley analysts pointed out that the technological breakthrough of Xingzhe Gen3 lies in the ultra-charging stability throughout its lifecycle—after 1000 ultra-charging cycles, the battery health (SOH) remains above 90%. "This addresses the degradation issue, rather than being a peak data gimmick."
In the direction of batteries for high-end models, CATL simultaneously released the third-generation Qilin battery, using NCM (Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese) cathode, with an energy density of 280Wh/kg and a volumetric energy density of 600Wh/L, achieving a driving range of 1000km, and the overall weight of the battery pack is only 625kg—255kg lighter than the LFP battery that achieves the same range. J.P. Morgan's calculations show that this weight difference can bring: 0-100km/h acceleration is 0.6 seconds faster, braking distance is reduced by 1.44 meters, the lifespan of chassis components is extended by 40%, and energy consumption per 100km is reduced by 6%.
CATL Chairman Zeng Yuqun said at the scene that models priced above 250,000 yuan using LFP batteries are "inherent cost reduction". This statement was interpreted by J.P. Morgan as CATL's full bet on the high-end NCM market—currently, CATL's market share of NCM in China is as high as 77%, while BYD hardly produces NCM batteries.
Another important release of this Technology Day is the Qilin condensed state battery, with an energy density of 350Wh/kg and 760Wh/L, standard sedan range can exceed 1500km, and SUV can exceed 1000km. Morgan Stanley pointed out that this is the first time that condensed state technology has been transferred from the aviation field to passenger car applications, and solid-state electrolytes can fundamentally eliminate the risks of liquid electrolyte leakage and combustion.
In the hybrid market, CATL released the second-generation Xiaoyao Super Hybrid Battery: LFP version pure electric range is 500km, an increase of 25% compared to the previous generation; NCM version reaches 600km, and also supports 10C ultra-charging. The NCM version has a probability of less than 1% to start the range-extending engine, and with a fuel tank, it can achieve a total range of over 2000km. The battery has also passed bullet-resistant tests, capable of withstanding 1500 joules of impact energy, ten times the national standard. The series of Xiaoyao has covered cooperation with brands such as Li Auto, Avata, Deep Blue, NEVO, and NIO.
Three Strategic Narratives: Industrialization, Northern Market, and Battery Swap Ecology
While interpreting product upgrades, the three investment banks also presented CATL's more macro strategic logic from different dimensions.
Morgan Stanley made the most distinctive judgment, writing in the report: "The highlight of this Technology Day is not the eye-catching
