The cooling tower was hit — why is the reactor still running?

A cooling tower — the large structure that vents a reactor's waste heat into the atmosphere — is part of the auxiliary heat-dissipation system, not the reactor core itself.
This means → shell damage to a cooling tower is not the same as damage to nuclear fuel or primary-loop piping. It does not directly threaten core safety in the short term.
