According to The Information, Google has signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense, allowing the Pentagon to use Google AI models in classified operations. Sources familiar with the matter stated that the agreement includes provisions for use in "any lawful government purpose".

This agreement is a revision based on Google's existing Department of Defense contracts. Google had previously signed an agreement last November to allow the Pentagon to deploy its AI in non-classified scenarios, and the new agreement expands the scope of use to classified systems.

The controversy first arose internally at Google. Before the signing, over 600 Google employees submitted a letter to CEO Sundar Pichai, demanding that the company refuse the agreement, citing that classified work would diminish external oversight and increase the risk of AI misuse.

A Google public sector spokesperson stated that the company remains committed to not using AI for domestic mass surveillance, or for autonomous weapons without appropriate human supervision. However, sources familiar with the agreement say that it requires Google to assist in adjusting AI safety settings and filters when requested by the government.
