Japan's August trade deficit hit ¥1.1 trillion — the fourth consecutive month in the red — as imports surged 28% year-on-year, far outpacing export growth of 19.3%, driven by prices rather than volumes.

01

A ¥1.1 trillion gap — where did the money go?

August exports totalled ¥10 trillion, up 19.3% year-on-year — the twelfth straight month of growth. Imports reached ¥11.1 trillion, up 28%.
This means → import growth outran exports by nearly 9 percentage points, and the gap has widened for four months running.
In plain terms = Japanese firms are selling well abroad, but what they buy back has been rising in price even faster — the difference shows up as a deficit.
02

On the export side — what carried the load?

Semiconductor and electronic-component exports jumped 52.3% year-on-year; chip-making equipment exports rose 40.1%.
Auto exports grew 16.5% — still a traditional pillar, but far behind chip-related products in pace.
This reflects the fact that global chip demand remains elevated, and Japan is capturing its biggest export gains in equipment and components.
03

Why did imports surge so hard?

Crude-oil imports soared 58.7% year-on-year — energy costs were the single biggest import driver.
Electronic-component imports surged 82.1% — Japan exports chip equipment in bulk yet also imports chip parts in bulk.
In plain terms = energy is expensive and tech components are expensive; both pushed total imports to ¥11.1 trillion.
04

Volumes barely moved — so what drove the numbers?

August export volumes rose only 2.5% year-on-year; import volumes rose just 2.7% — physical trade was nearly flat.
This means → the dramatic jump in trade value was almost entirely driven by price increases, not by Japan actually shipping or receiving much more stuff.
This signals that if commodity and component prices retreat, the deficit has room to narrow — but whether the current price trend reverses remains the key unknown.
