Nasdaq 100 Quarterly Rebalance May Nearly Double SpaceX's Weighting
nashnova research
SpaceX's Nasdaq 100 weighting may jump from 1.25% to 2.25%, triggering roughly $15.5 billion in passive net buying — but the real fundamental-pricing window won't open until November's massive unlock.
Why is the weighting suddenly doubling?
SpaceX's market cap tops $2 trillion, ranking it sixth in the Nasdaq 100 — yet its weighting sits at only 19th. The gap comes down to index math.
Nasdaq calculates index market cap using the lower of total shares outstanding or three times free-float shares. Post-IPO lock-ups kept SpaceX's free float below 10%, mechanically suppressing its weight.
This means → the market isn't undervaluing SpaceX; the index rule is mechanically holding it down.
What changed?
More than 1 billion shares have gradually unlocked, lifting SpaceX's free-float ratio from under 10% to roughly 30%.
That directly triggers a weight increase. JPMorgan strategist Min Moon's team estimates the weight could rise from 1.25% to 2.25%.
Nasdaq will announce the rebalance results after Friday's close; the adjustment takes effect September 21.
Where does $15.5 billion in buying come from?
Total assets tracking the Nasdaq 100 stand at roughly $1.7 trillion, including the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF.
A weight shift from 1.25% to 2.25% forces those passive funds to mechanically add SpaceX exposure — generating an estimated $15.5 billion in net buying.
In plain terms = nobody is buying because they like the fundamentals; index funds are forced to buy by the rules.
How will the stock react?
SpaceX shares have flatlined since the June IPO, trading in a $133–$150 range over the past four weeks — close to the $135 offer price.
Interactive Brokers chief strategist Steve Sosnick said the rebalance "should bring more demand from products like QQQ," but some newly unlocked shareholders may sell into it.
This means → short-term price action will be driven by mechanical buying, yet sell pressure coexists — the move is not one-directional.
When does the real test arrive?
River Wealth Advisors CEO Ed O'Gorman noted the true gauge of fundamental sentiment is the Q3 earnings report in November — which will trigger a new wave of roughly 1.3 billion shares unlocking.
He said: "The really telling event is the lock-up expiry triggered by the November earnings, when a massive amount of stock hits the market."
In plain terms = this rebalance is a rule-driven "forced buy"; the fundamental-pricing window doesn't truly open until November.
