OpenAI Achieves 10GW US AI Compute Capacity Target Ahead of Schedule
OpenAI stated in a blog post on Wednesday that the company has secured a 10-gigawatt U.S. AI computing power contract, achieving its original 2029 goal several years ahead of schedule. Over the past 90 days, the newly contracted capacity has exceeded 3GW, including 2GW from Amazon and 1GW from an undisclosed source.
This progress is connected to the Stargate project. Stargate initially made its debut in January 2025 as a $50 billion project involving OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. According to OpenAI's latest statement, Stargate has become more of an overarching brand for its data center plan, with the core objective of securing infrastructure in advance for larger-scale AI demands.
OpenAI has recently exited or suspended some Stargate-related projects, including not leasing the expansion of its flagship data center in Abilene, Texas, and pausing the UK project due to energy and regulatory costs. According to Bloomberg's report this month, citing知情人, OpenAI had been negotiating the capacity of a site in Norway developed by Nscale but ultimately did not complete the transaction.
This illustrates that competition in AI computing power is not only dependent on funding but also on whether electricity, land, permits, transmission, labor, and community support can be simultaneously secured. OpenAI emphasized in its blog that the company is still evaluating additional U.S. data center locations and will significantly expand computing power in the coming years.
