Options Imply Largest Tesla Pre-Earnings Move in Nearly a Year
0xBroomberg
Tesla reports Q2 after Wednesday's close. Options price in a 5.76% implied move — the largest since October 2025. Calls account for over two-thirds of premium, yet the median actual earnings-day swing over the past four quarters is just 3.5%.
What does a 5.76% implied move actually mean?
At-the-money options — contracts closest to the current stock price — are pricing in a 5.76% swing, the widest since October 2025.
This means → option sellers are demanding the highest "insurance premium" in nearly a year, signaling that the market expects the sharpest single-day move since last July.
Yet the median earnings-day move over the past four quarters is just 3.5%, well below the current implied level. In plain terms = the options market is "shouting" a bigger swing than history typically delivers.
Calls are surging — what are traders betting on?
By midday Tuesday, call volume hit 244,000 contracts versus 116,000 puts; calls captured more than two-thirds of total premium, a decidedly bullish tilt.
The hottest contract: a $380-strike call expiring Friday, drawing over $15 million in spending.
Each contract costs roughly $11. This means → the stock needs to rally about 3% within the week for buyers to break even. In plain terms = this is a short-dated "big earnings pop" lottery ticket with narrow odds.
Why is SpaceX weighing on Tesla too?
SpaceX completed its IPO last month and has since pulled back sharply from the highs; its current valuation sits at roughly $1.7 trillion, just above Tesla's $1.4 trillion.
TheoTrade instructor Gianni Di Poce said: "If you want to be aggressive, you can say it's near support and going long makes sense, but the stock has been range-bound all year. The SpaceX overhang is pressing on it."
This reflects a deeper question the market is wrestling with: how to allocate capital across two trillion-dollar Musk companies — and whether the two could eventually merge. SpaceX options imply a 12% move ahead of its first-ever earnings report on August 4.
What to listen for on the earnings call?
Two variables will set the post-earnings direction: the Robotaxi commercialization timeline and the trajectory of core-business margins.
This means → the numbers themselves may not be the main event — Musk's comments on when autonomous ride-hailing actually launches are the signal the market most wants to hear.
In plain terms = the earnings release is the "report card"; the call is the "compass."
