Pentagon Engulfed in Starlink Pricing Dispute with SpaceX
According to a Reuters report, as LUCAS kamikaze drones equipped with Starlink terminals have demonstrated their effectiveness in combat against Iran, SpaceX executives have promptly approached the Pentagon, demanding a price increase on the grounds that the military has been using a higher service level— the military has been paying about $5,000 per terminal, while SpaceX believes the corresponding price should be closer to $25,000.
The Pentagon countered, stating that the price bracket in question was designed for aircraft, and the LUCAS drones merely use Starlink for a few hours, rendering it incomparable. The result of the dispute was a compromise by the military, with the cost per drone nearly doubling from about $30,000.
The pricing friction does not end here. To help Iranian citizens break through communication blockades, the Pentagon has also negotiated with SpaceX on "direct-to-phone" services, with the latter demanding a start-up fee of $500 million and a monthly operational fee of $100 million, which greatly shocked defense officials. In the meantime, the Pentagon is considering an additional purchase of over 3,500 Starshield terminal subscriptions, which could bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for SpaceX annually.
The structural imbalance underlies this game. Although the U.S. military claims to be seeking alternatives such as OneWeb or Amazon, SpaceX controls over 60% of the satellites in orbit globally, and the U.S. military has become dependent on it for battlefield positioning and communication.
Unlike traditional defense contractors, SpaceX has a vast commercial market, with government revenue accounting for only about 20% of its total revenue, giving it a rare bargaining advantage over the Pentagon. Some analysts have bluntly stated that SpaceX "has cornered the U.S. government."
It is also noteworthy that SpaceX is reportedly seeking to complete an IPO next month that could set a historical scale, aiming to maximize its revenue at this junction.
