Salesforce unveiled Koa, its first in-house reasoning model built on Nvidia's open-weight Nemotron architecture and post-trained for sales and customer-service workflows — a direct challenge to Anthropic and OpenAI's grip on enterprise AI pricing and data control.

01

What is Koa, and why build it now?

Koa is Salesforce's first in-house reasoning model — an AI that breaks complex tasks into multiple steps rather than producing a single answer — post-trained on Nvidia's open-weight Nemotron architecture.
This means → Salesforce previously had to call Claude or ChatGPT for multi-step enterprise tasks. Now it has its own option.
Salesforce AI EVP Jayesh Govindarajan was blunt: the reason they hadn't built one before was "no suitable base model." Nemotron filled that gap because it is a state-of-the-art U.S. sovereign pretrained model with clear data provenance.
He singled out Alibaba's Qwen, saying "we have no idea what data Qwen trained on." This reflects a hardening line: data traceability is becoming a gating criterion in enterprise AI procurement.
02

No real customer data in training — how?

Koa was trained entirely on synthetic data — AI-generated scenarios, not real customer records — simulating everything from "an angry customer calling support" to "a sales rep closing a deal."
In plain terms = the model has never seen a single real customer conversation, so it theoretically cannot leak customer data to any third party.
This means → it directly addresses enterprises' top AI concern — data security — and is Koa's core differentiator versus calling third-party frontier models directly.
03

Why is token efficiency the key selling point?

Nvidia's generative-AI VP Kari Ann Briski framed Nemotron's advantage as a triad: sovereign AI, time to first token, and efficient reasoning — together forming what she called "token economics."
In plain terms = a token is the billing unit for AI processing. Fewer tokens per task means lower cost for the enterprise.
Salesforce's central claim: Koa uses fewer tokens than Claude or ChatGPT for equivalent tasks, directly cutting enterprise AI spend.
Under Agentforce's AI-gateway mechanism, the system can automatically route tasks to Koa or another model based on complexity — it is not all-or-nothing.
04

If Salesforce built its own model, is the Anthropic partnership over?

Salesforce has not cut ties with Anthropic. At the same event it announced ClaudeForce, a partnership letting enterprises use Claude as their AI interface while keeping data inside Salesforce infrastructure.
This means → Salesforce's strategy is "add an option," not "replace": route simple tasks to Koa to save money, keep Claude available for complex ones.
The real open question: whether Koa can consistently deliver on its token-efficiency promise in live enterprise deployments — that will determine how far the open-source route can go in the enterprise AI market.
