SpaceX opens the door to one of the most closely watched IPOs in history to regular investors.

According to the prospectus filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this week, a portion of the IPO shares will be directly offered through three major retail brokerage platforms: Robinhood, Fidelity, and Charles Schwab. Retail investors can subscribe at the same price and at the same time as institutional investors, breaking the tradition that IPO shares have always been skewed towards Wall Street's big clients.

This week, SpaceX officially announced its plan to go public on the NASDAQ with the stock ticker SPCX. The company secretly filed an application with regulatory authorities in April, and the roadshow is expected to start on June 8th.

This is one of the largest and most closely watched tech IPOs in recent years. The direct opening of the subscription channel to retail investors is already a significant breakthrough in the traditional IPO mechanism—in the usual process, retail investors often have to pick up the shares at a higher price after the market opens on the first day of listing.

Founded in 2002, SpaceX has evolved from a space startup to one of the world's most highly valued private companies. The company is now a primary commercial crewed launch partner for NASA, with businesses including reusable rockets, defense contracts, and the Starlink satellite internet network.

The number of Starlink satellites in orbit is currently around 10,000, and has become the company's most important growth engine. At the same time, Musk's xAI is continuously expanding, further enriching the imaginative space of this business empire.

Despite the channels being open, retail investors still face practical constraints. SpaceX clearly states in the prospectus that subscriptions through brokerage platforms must meet the conditions and requirements of each platform, and there are limits to the distribution of IPO shares. The market estimates that demand will far exceed available shares; whether one can get a piece of the action remains unknown.
