SWIFT has begun testing a blockchain-based cross-border payment platform with 17 banks — including Citi, Wells Fargo, and UBS — aiming to replace multi-day, high-fee international transfers with round-the-clock instant settlement. The plumbing beneath global payments is being relaid.

01

What problem is this platform trying to solve?

Traditional cross-border payments pass through multiple banks in sequence. Settlement can take days; fees run as high as 10% of the transfer amount.
SWIFT's new platform uses blockchain and is built specifically for interbank transfers of tokenized deposits — bank deposits mapped onto a blockchain ledger, typically still covered by national deposit insurance.
This means → even banks with no direct relationship can settle instantly through the platform, slashing both cost and wait time.
02

Who is involved, and how far along are they?

The pilot includes 17 banks: Citi, Wells Fargo, MUFG, UBS, and BNP Paribas among them.
HSBC and Standard Chartered completed the first live transactions on the platform in August. This month, Citi finished transaction tests with First Abu Dhabi Bank, OCBC, and DBS.
In plain terms = this is no longer a proof of concept. Real money between major banks has already moved on-chain.
03

Why is SWIFT stepping in to build this itself?

SWIFT's network spans more than 11,000 member banks and underpins most cross-border transactions worldwide.
Debopama Sen, Citi's head of payments, said the platform could enable value transfer 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
This reflects SWIFT's decision — as the incumbent "pipe operator" — to embrace blockchain proactively rather than wait for emerging payment networks to route around it.
04

Is there another track running in parallel?

SWIFT is also participating in Project Agora, a separate initiative that aims to connect central-bank tokenized currencies with other tokenized deposits — a central-bank digital currency path distinct from the platform above.
A MUFG payments executive called blockchain "an indispensable technology for the demands of our era."
This means → two parallel tracks are accelerating the infrastructure race for tokenized cross-border payments. Which one wins will depend on how fast national regulators can coordinate their frameworks.
