Trump Claims 3-Day Ceasefire Begins on 9th Between Russia and Ukraine
On the afternoon of the 8th Eastern time, U.S. President Trump posted on social media that Russia and Ukraine will implement a ceasefire for three days starting from the 9th and exchange 1,000 prisoners of war.
Trump claimed that the ceasefire request was made "directly" by him and agreed upon by Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky, aimed at celebrating the World War II Victory Day. This ceasefire will include the suspension of all military operations and one exchange of prisoners of war, with both sides swapping 1,000 prisoners of war.
Trump stated that negotiations to end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict were still ongoing and "getting closer to achieving the goal".
On April 29th, Trump said that he had a "long conversation" in a phone call with Putin that day and suggested a short-term ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
Putin said this evening when convening a meeting of the Presidium of the Security Council of the Russian Federation via video link, that he and Trump reviewed the history of the Soviet Union and the United States "fighting side by side against the Nazis and achieving victory together" during their phone call.
The Russian side announced on the 4th that, in commemoration of the Victory Day of the Great Patriotic War on May 9th, a ceasefire will be implemented from the 8th to the 9th, hoping the Ukrainian side will follow suit. Zelensky subsequently announced that the Ukrainian side would unilaterally ceasefire from midnight on the 6th, but did not mention the duration of the ceasefire. On the 7th, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Russian side would cease fire from midnight on the 8th to 10 days in the special military operation area against Ukraine. However, in recent days, Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of violating ceasefire arrangements and launching attacks.
On May 8th local time, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio, when talking about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, said that the United States is still ready to continue playing the role of mediator, but if efforts in this regard "do not make progress", the U.S. side "does not want to waste time".
Rubio also said that the United States will "take more measures" on the issue of sanctions against Cuba.
