UBS Market Fragility Indicator Hits Historic Extreme for the First Time in Two Years

UBS's proprietary fragility index "Turbu-lens" hit its maximum reading of 1 on August 19 — the first time in nearly two years; strategists warn the market's shock-absorption capacity has deteriorated sharply, with the September Fed meeting and November midterms as the two key risk windows.

01

What does this index actually measure?

Turbu-lens is UBS's proprietary market-fragility index — a composite gauge of how "breakable" markets are when hit by a shock. It draws on roughly 100 high-yield corporate CDS (credit default swaps — essentially insurance contracts on corporate debt), G10 FX volatility, and S&P 500 CTA positioning (trend-following funds' directional bets).
The closer the reading is to 1, the more markets are simultaneously stretched — credit risk rising, currencies swinging, trend-following positions crowded.
This means → it does not predict "how far markets fall tomorrow." It tells you: if a shock arrives, the market's ability to absorb it is very low.
02

What happened after the last time it peaked?

The previous reading of 1 came in late 2024, just after the US presidential election and ahead of the Fed's first post-election rate decision.
The VIX — the CBOE's one-month volatility index, often called the "fear gauge" — subsequently climbed 12 points, then surged roughly 25 points by March 2025.
In plain terms = the last time the red light came on, the fear gauge did spike hard. History need not repeat, but fragility did translate into real volatility.
03

Where are the next risk windows?

The UBS strategy team, led by US equity-derivatives head Maxwell Grinacoff, flags two dates: the September FOMC meeting and the November midterm elections.
The options market currently prices the S&P 500's single-day move around each date at roughly 1%.
This means → the market is already buying insurance for those two days, but if the actual shock exceeds expectations, realized moves could be far larger than 1%.
04

How does UBS suggest hedging?

For the September Fed decision: sell VIX September 16-strike puts and use the premium to fund a 20/25 call spread. In plain terms = bet that volatility won't stay too low (sell puts, collect premium), then use that cash to bet it could spike (buy the call spread).
For the November midterms: buy November 19-strike puts while selling October 19-strike puts, positioning for a post-election volatility crush. This means → the trade bets volatility gets bid up before the election and drops quickly afterward — the payoff comes from that gap.
Both strategies share the same logic: use the cheap leg to fund the expensive one, keeping net cost in check.
05

Does a red light guarantee a sell-off?

UBS strategists explicitly caution: a peak reading signals extreme fragility, but it does not mean the catalyst is already in place.
This reflects a critical distinction — "fragile" and "breaking" are two different things; the market still needs a clear trigger.
In plain terms = the index tells you the glass is sitting on the edge of the table, but nobody yet knows whether — or when — someone will push it.
