Bottom line: the headline was net income up 77.4% year over year, but the quarter itself was not the main surprise. Gross margin of 67.7% was solid rather than spectacular.   • 3Q gross-margin guidance of 65–67% sits below 2Q's 67.7% as the initial dilution from the N2 ramp begins to appear.
  • Operating-margin guidance of 56–58% is also below 2Q's 60.3%.

This is not evidence of weaker demand. It is the front-loaded cost of bringing a new node, overseas fabs, and depreciation into production. The expense is consistent with expansion, but it still lowers the near-term earnings anchor and should not be hidden inside the bullish narrative.

  • “The quarter is secondary; the earnings call is the main event.” Confirmed. Revenue was largely known and gross margin merely met the bar; guidance and capex drove the real information change.
  • A 67–68% gross-margin range was more reasonable than the 70% whisper. Confirmed at 67.7%.

Read-across with ASML: the AI supply chain closes the loop

The prior day's equipment signal and TSMC's spending signal point in the same direction. ASML reported strength and raised its full-year outlook; TSMC then lifted capex from the $52–56B range to $60–64B. Equipment demand upstream and foundry investment downstream are both accelerating.

Two tensions remain important:

  • Volume: equipment shipment assumptions can remain conservative even while foundry capex is aggressive, so delivery timing matters.
  • Price: equipment makers want price increases while TSMC is already acknowledging component and inflation pressure. That bargaining process will affect how margins are distributed across the chain.

The physical expansion is visible in leading-edge logic and advanced packaging, including US capacity. But each project's timing, yield, labor cost, and customer qualification still need to be tracked rather than assumed.

The thesis is stronger. The core view—that TSMC's valuation depends more on forward demand and capacity decisions than on one quarter's earnings headline—was validated by the capex raise and 3Q revenue outlook.

Two qualifications remain:

  1. The net-income beat was stronger than the underlying gross-margin beat.
  2. N2 dilution is real and will pressure the near-term margin anchor.
