Citi Downgrades Moderna to Sell, Target Price Implies 60% Downside

Citi cut Moderna to Sell with an $80 target, implying roughly 60% downside from the current price; the analyst argues that even a 100% success rate on the cancer vaccine cannot justify the stock's ~$80 billion market cap.

01

What exactly did Citi say?

Analyst Geoff Meacham downgraded Moderna from Neutral to Sell, raising his target from $60 to $80.
At Tuesday's close of $203.46, that $80 target still implies the stock needs to fall about 60%.
Moderna shares dropped nearly 6% in Wednesday's pre-market session on the call.
02

Why had the stock rallied so much?

On August 19, Moderna reported positive late-stage trial results for its personalized cancer vaccine intismeran; the stock has since surged 223%.
This means → the market priced an unlaunched cancer vaccine as though it were already a blockbuster drug.
The vaccine, used with Merck's Keytruda, met its trial endpoint in over 1,100 high-risk or advanced melanoma patients.
03

Why does Citi say the valuation "doesn't compute"?

Meacham tested the valuation two ways — neither holds up:
Comparable-company method: Moderna's ~$80 billion market cap rivals Regeneron's, yet its expected revenue and earnings are far lower. In plain terms = same price tag, much weaker earnings power.
Net-present-value method: even setting the success probability of intismeran's key oncology programs at 100%, the model supports only ~$100 per share — still about 50% below the current price.
This means → to justify the stock at ~$200, Moderna would need roughly $260 billion in annual oncology sales — 7× Citi's model estimate.
04

Can the cancer vaccine extend beyond melanoma?

Meacham notes that melanoma is highly sensitive to checkpoint inhibitors — drugs that help the immune system recognize cancer cells — making it the ideal proving ground.
But kidney, lung, and bladder cancers each have distinct tumor biology; whether the melanoma results can be replicated remains uncertain.
In plain terms = scoring high on the easiest test does not guarantee the same result on a harder one.
05

Where does the rest of Wall Street stand?

Per LSEG data, of 24 analysts covering Moderna: 15 rate it Hold, 6 rate it Buy or Strong Buy, and 3 rate it Underperform.
Citi's downgrade widens the bearish camp further.
This reflects a core market divide: whether intismeran can prove its commercial value beyond melanoma — and that answer will determine if the current valuation logic holds.
