Huatai Securities Predicts Hang Seng Tech Index Reshuffle: 10 Additions Each for Market Cap and Growth Groups
nashnova research
The Hang Seng Tech Index is expanding from 30 to 50 constituents. Huatai Securities predicts 20 additions, triggering roughly HK$28.9 billion in rebalancing flows — the biggest passive-money event in Hong Kong tech this year-end.
What changed in the final rules?
Hang Seng Indexes Company published its final methodology on October 7, dropping sector restrictions, expanding tech sub-themes from 16 to 24, and raising constituent count from 30 to 50 — split into a market-cap bucket and a growth bucket.
Two new hurdles were added versus the consultation draft: minimum daily turnover of HK$100 million and annual revenue of at least HK$500 million for two consecutive years. This means → thinly traded, high-growth small caps are screened out, reducing speculative risk in the growth bucket.
The autonomous-driving sub-theme now requires automakers to derive "the majority of total sales from pure-EV product lines"; digital finance explicitly excludes banks and brokerages. In plain terms = the classification boundaries are no longer vague — there are hard, quantified criteria for who gets in and who does not.
Which stocks are most likely to be added?
Market-cap bucket — 10 predicted additions: SHEIN-W, CATL, Kingboard Laminates, JD Logistics, GDS-SW, ASMPT, Biren Technology, AAC Technologies, UBTECH, XtalPi Holdings.
Growth bucket — 10 predicted additions: Clover Technology, Innoscience, Unisound, Hesai-W, Kingsoft Cloud, East Buy, RoboSense, Mobvista, Hygieia AI Group, among others.
Compared with earlier predictions based on the consultation draft, 8 names are new entrants — including SHEIN-W, which listed in September and enters the market-cap bucket at a high rank. XtalPi moved from the growth to the market-cap bucket; Hygieia AI Group moved the other way. This reflects a significant reshuffle in the growth bucket once the final-draft thresholds took effect.
Who sits on the borderline?
China Literature, Pony AI-W, and Geek+-W are on the edge of inclusion — one step away.
Ganfeng Lithium and Geely Auto have viable classification paths under the final sub-theme definitions; Huatai flags them as key watchlist names.
Hygieia AI Group's interim results show Atlas AI-agent revenue of RMB 115 million, up 135.6% year-on-year. Huatai sees a solid growth-bucket foundation.
How big is the money impact?
Hang Seng Indexes Company's simulation shows the existing 30 constituents still account for roughly 90% of the revised index weight; the 20 new names together carry about 10%, down from 11.5% in the consultation-draft simulation.
Based on US$37.1 billion in tracking AUM, the rebalancing totals roughly HK$28.9 billion — about HK$20.8 billion for the market-cap bucket and HK$8.1 billion for the growth bucket.
CATL is the single largest addition, with an expected weight of 2.27%–2.43% and projected inflows of HK$6.6–7.0 billion. GDS-SW, SHEIN-W, and JD Logistics have lower daily turnover, so their inflow absorption may take longer.
What are the key dates?
The review result will be announced on November 20; constituent changes take effect on December 7.
December 7 is the settlement date for the HK$28.9 billion rebalancing. This means → the window between the November 20 announcement and the December 7 effective date will be the most active period for front-running passive flows.
