Huawei Launches Mate 90 Series with Proprietary Chip Featuring 3D Folding Architecture
nashnova research
Huawei on October 1 unveiled its Mate 90 series, with the flagship Kirin 9050 Pro chip using a new 3D wiring architecture called LogicFolding to boost performance — while advanced fab capacity remains severely constrained, phone prices rise industry-wide, and Apple's entry reshapes the foldable market.
What exactly is LogicFolding?
Huawei calls the technique LogicFolding — rerouting a chip's internal wiring from a flat, two-dimensional layout into a three-dimensional stack, cramming more connections into the same footprint.
This means → unable to access the most advanced process nodes, Huawei is trading vertical density for performance — a detour, but a viable one.
The trade-off is direct: each chip consumes more wafer area, pushing manufacturing costs higher.
How tight is the capacity crunch?
Consumer chief Richard Yu (余承东) said plainly: China's advanced semiconductor capacity is extremely limited, and Huawei's phone chips compete with its Ascend AI chips for the same production lines.
Rotating chairman Eric Xu (徐直军) confirmed last month that supply of the Ascend 950 AI chip cannot meet domestic demand.
In plain terms = Huawei's bottleneck is not design capability — it is who can actually manufacture the chips. The phone and AI divisions are fighting over the same scarce fab slots.
Prices are rising — so why is Huawei's share still growing?
Rising memory and component costs add roughly $200 per handset; Yu said Huawei "must raise prices too, but slower than costs are climbing."
IDC data: China smartphone shipments fell 7% year-on-year from January to August, yet Huawei's shipments grew 13% over the same period.
This reflects Huawei using brand premium and in-house chip differentiation to offset a shrinking market — but its Q2 average selling price dropped 14.7% YoY to $628, signaling it is also widening its price range to capture more volume.
Apple enters foldables — should Huawei worry?
Apple launched its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, last month, entering a segment long dominated by Samsung and Huawei.
Yu welcomed the move: "Glad to see peers bring out similar products." He disclosed Huawei holds roughly 75% of China's foldable market.
In the four days after iPhone Duo's launch (Sept 10–13), sales of Huawei's Pura X Max foldable jumped 76% week-on-week; the model has shipped over 1.2 million units in China since its April debut. This means → Apple's entry has, at least short-term, boosted consumer attention to the foldable category — and Huawei is the immediate beneficiary.
The real question: can LogicFolding scale?
Huawei has not disclosed the Kirin 9050 Pro's foundry partner; the industry widely assumes it is SMIC (中芯国际), which declined to comment.
Yu said more Huawei phones will use LogicFolding-process chips going forward — but under continuing U.S. export controls on advanced equipment, yield rates and wafer costs at scale are the true bottleneck.
In plain terms = the technology roadmap is now public, but whether it can be produced at high volume and manageable cost will determine if this path actually holds.
