Meta unveiled its 100-gram VR Glasses at $1,299 — less than a third of Apple Vision Pro's price — betting that a split-body lightweight design and IMAX content can crack the mass market Apple couldn't.

01

What does $1,299 get you, and how does it compare to Apple?

VR Glasses cost $1,299, roughly a third of Apple Vision Pro's $3,699 starting price and just over twice the $599 Meta Quest 3.
The headset body weighs about 100 grams — roughly one-sixth of Vision Pro. This means → Meta is treating "light enough to actually wear" and "cheap enough to actually buy" as its two core selling points, aimed squarely at Vision Pro's two biggest weaknesses.
Shipments are planned for spring next year; the device is currently in pre-order.
02

How did they make it so light? What is "split-body" design?

Split-body design — moving the heavy parts (processor, battery, cooling fan) off your head into a separate box: the processor, fan, battery, and storage all sit in an external "compute puck" that clips to a belt or rests on a desk.
In plain terms = your head carries only a pair of glasses; the hard work happens at your waist. The Meta Quest 3S weighs roughly five times as much.
The trade-off is display specs: per-eye resolution is about 2.5K, below Vision Pro's 4K. But Bloomberg's hands-on review found text and graphics still sharp, with the gap barely noticeable in daily use. The device also offers a 5K Infinite Display with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support.
03

How do you control it without handheld controllers?

Primary input is eye tracking, hand gestures, and voice commands — no controller needed, though it is compatible with older Quest controllers and Xbox gamepads.
A new feature is touch typing: the device projects a virtual keyboard and trackpad onto a desk surface. Bloomberg's reviewer said the feel was close to typing on an iPad — a clear upgrade over the Quest line's mid-air keyboard.
Battery life is about three hours per charge, slightly longer than Vision Pro and up to twice that of Quest 3. Continuous wired power is also supported.
04

What do the IMAX certification and Disney+ deal mean?

Meta is billing VR Glasses as the first VR device with IMAX Enhanced certification, delivering IMAX's signature expanded aspect ratio and high-resolution viewing experience.
A partnership with Disney will let Disney+ users stream select films in 3D starting November this year — including some Marvel titles — blending the viewer's physical space with immersive environments, dynamic effects, and spatial audio.
This means → Meta is no longer selling VR on gaming alone. Cinema-grade content is the differentiator — making users feel that "putting on these glasses to watch an IMAX movie is worth it."
05

Is Reality Labs actually close to making money?

CTO Andrew Bosworth said Reality Labs has "finally turned the corner" — years of investment have built capabilities that now let Meta develop hardware far more efficiently.
Meta's statement said the company is "working to make VR a profitable ecosystem within the coming years." This means → at $1,299, Meta expects to break even on each device — a fundamental shift from the Quest model, where hardware losses were subsidized by the app store and virtual goods.
Bosworth also acknowledged "a bit of gratitude" toward Apple — Vision Pro got entertainment partners interested in immersive computing and gave the industry "permission to explore a split architecture." But he was blunt: "We all know they didn't hit the bull's-eye — you can't wear that thing for long, and it doesn't look like glasses."
06

What else should you watch?

Also announced: Ray-Ban Meta Audio smart glasses — a no-camera variant starting at $349, shipping October 13. Dropping the camera cuts frame weight from 51 g to 43 g, making them indistinguishable from regular Ray-Bans. They retain Meta's AI assistant, music, calls, and voice translation.
In plain terms = this model is a direct answer to the "creep glasses" criticism. Multiple nightclubs, restaurants, and event venues had already banned the camera version; the no-camera edition removes the social stigma.
On the competitive side, Google is developing a similar device codenamed "Project Aura" in partnership with Xreal, expected later this year, setting up a direct rivalry with VR Glasses.
