SoFi Bank is migrating its entire $25 billion card program to stablecoin settlement on the Mastercard network — the first time a licensed U.S. bank has wired its full card-clearing pipeline through a stablecoin rather than keeping crypto on a separate track.

01

What actually happened?

SoFi Bank and Mastercard announced Tuesday that stablecoin settlement is now live across SoFi's debit and credit card programs, powered by SoFiUSD, SoFi's own stablecoin.
The migration covers SoFi Bank's entire card portfolio$25 billion in volume.
This means → this is not a pilot wallet or a crypto side-project; a licensed U.S. bank has switched its full card-settlement rail to stablecoins.
02

What do merchants have to do?

CEO Anthony Noto was explicit: merchants do not need to hold stablecoins, build new infrastructure, or change how they operate.
Settlement funds land instantly in a SoFi Bank account, available for withdrawal around the clock at zero cost.
In plain terms = the checkout experience stays identical; the back-end clearing quietly swaps from traditional interbank transfers to stablecoin rails — merchants may not even notice.
03

How did the market react?

After the announcement, SoFi rose 4.30% pre-market to $17.70; Mastercard gained 0.41% to $570.00.
This reflects the market assigning most of the deal's value to SoFi — it drives the migration and issues SoFiUSD.
Mastercard's muted move signals that the network side is playing a plumbing role, with limited incremental upside.
04

What comes next?

SoFi disclosed it is in talks with several large U.S. merchants to extend stablecoin settlement beyond its own card program.
This means → the current model runs only inside SoFi Bank's own cards; whether outside merchants will plug in is the critical test of commercial viability.
In plain terms = the $25 billion is the show apartment — the model only proves out when other merchants move in.
